INSTALL OF A STORAGE & MANUFACTURING MEZZANINE FLOOR IN COSHAM, PORTSMOUTH

Maximising Space: Westwood Projects Install a Storage and Manufacturing Mezzanine Floor in Cosham

Maximising space and efficiency are crucial for business success in manufacturing, production, and logistics. Recently, Westwood Projects undertook a complex mezzanine project to enhance the operational capability of a composite and carbon fibre manufacturing company based in Cosham, Portsmouth.

What are the benefits of a Mezzanine Floor?

As your business grows, your operational space requirements often exceed the physical footprint of your existing premises. Typical industrial properties and warehouses in Portsmouth and across the South Coast frequently benefit from extended roof heights. A mezzanine floor is ideal for using the area above your existing operation. It allows businesses to use their existing height for additional storage or operational areas without moving to a larger facility or engaging in costly structural additions.

Project Overview

Westwood Projects was approached to design and install a bespoke mezzanine floor to accommodate the specific needs of a newly acquired business in Cosham. The client was looking to offer additional services as part of the acquisition, and this expansion required an additional operational space of 380m2 of production and storage space. The project’s logistics were particularly complex, as the mezzanine was designed to fit around existing steel work and the gantry crane. The mezzanine design team needed to consider the new floor's load capacity, the suitability of the existing floor slab, the external access routes, and how best to effectively use the added space.

Design & Installation Process

  • Consultation and Planning: Westwood Projects began with a detailed consultation process, assessing the client's requirements, budget, and existing structure. They designed a bespoke mezzanine structure with multiple access points and sufficient load-bearing capability.
  • Fabrication: With the plans approved, the fabrication of steel components commenced in Westwood's facilities. This phase ensured the materials were ready for installation and met all industry standards.
  • Installation: Westwood's installation team arrived and commenced the mezzanine installation with precise coordination. They expertly assembled the floor using specialised equipment while ensuring minimal disruption to existing warehouse operations.
  • Ancillaries: The mezzanine floor required a handrail and kickplate to all four sides and featured two general access staircases and pallet loading gates. After installation, Westwood Projects conducted a final walkthrough with the client as part of our stringent quality control process.
  • Adaptability and Futureproofing One of the best features of the mezzanine floor installed by Westwood Projects is its adaptability. The design considers future expansion, allowing clients to modify or add features if their business grows. This option is invaluable in today’s fast-paced business environment.
  • Benefits Realised by the Client The mezzanine floor installation will improve the client's operational efficiency, including increased storage capacity. The additional floor space will provide much-needed room for stock and parts without sourcing additional storage space away from the premises. Relocation Savings: The client has saved significantly on operational costs by avoiding significant renovations or a move to a larger facility.
